Erdogan's Eradication of Dissent - the Re-Rise of Instability in Turkey

The government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey has been systematically jailing its opposition. The eradication of dissent has sharply increased since the July coup attempt against Erdogan.

In recent days, the Erdogan government has jailed opposition figures in unprecedented numbers including today's arrest and remand to custody of nine journalists from the pro-opposition newspaper, Cumhuriyet. Authorities in Istanbul have accused the journalist of some alleged link to United States(US) cleric Fethullah Gulen. Gulen has denied any involvement in the July 15 coup attempt in Turkey.

Nine politicians including leaders of the pro-Kurdish(HDP) party, according to the BBC-News, were jailed in Turkey on Friday and earlier today, another nine officials of the HDP were detained by Erdogan authorities.

Since the July 14 coup attempt against Erdogan, 110,000 Turks have been fired of suspended from their jobs and another 37,000 have been arrested under emergency powers granted to Erdogan. At the beginning of November, Erdogan had closed 15 media outlets in Turkey acting under behemoth powers that are sure to usher in a re-rise of instability in Turkey.
