Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood and a Pending Terrorist Designation by the USA

As Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi cements himself into position to become a-long-time serving leader of the land of the Pharaohs, United States (US) President Donald has moved to designate the opposition to Sisi's rule - the Muslim Brotherhood, as a terror organization. 

Sisi ousted by coup d'etat the democratically elected fifth president of Egypt, Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brotherhood member, from power in 2013. Sisi's control of Egypt's parliament recently won him a constitutional change so that he could stay in power to at least 2030.

Any independent student of the history of the Middle East could find it difficult to accept the designation of the Society of the Muslim Brothers - the Muslim Brotherhood, as a terror group. Founded in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood is as Egyptian as Egypt. The charity and community work and contributions of the Brotherhood to Egypt and throughout the Arab world, are well documented.

Deeply embedded into social and political life, though often controversial and ambiguous, the Muslim Brotherhood faces annihilation under Sisi's regime. Thousands of members have been tried in mass before the Sisi courts and many have been sentenced to death and others jailed for life or long periods. This is the same group whose presidential candidate won a democratically conducted election back in 2012. 

Yet, following a last month, Washington, DC, meeting with President Trump, Sisi apparently, was able to convince the great American democracy that the Muslim Brotherhood is worthy of a terror designation.
