The People, a Pandemic and Politics - a Viral Mix of Deaths and Infections

All the world's people - all 7.8  billion of us, who live across the defined continents, stand exposed and vulnerable to the deadly and highly contagious COVID-19 pandemic, which has already infected 16.8 million people worldwide and killed more than 662,000.

The Novel Coronavirus, in lieu of any viable vaccine to fight the pesky pathogen, has demonstrated that it could strike at humanity wherever and whenever it readily finds hosts and to leave in its wake, events of frightful infections and gruesome deaths.

In some countries where COVID-19 has forever altered prior norms of humanity, the disease has become measurably contained. Yet, in a few places, to wit: the United States (US) and Brazil, where a viral cocktail of political rhetoric has been willfully added to the already deadly trait of the pandemic; infections and deaths continue to soar amid political distractions and opposition to wearing facial masks, while dangerously touting unscientific remedies to the deadly contagion.

The dangerous politicization of COVID-19 by the presidents of the US and Brazil is the main reason both countries have the two highest COVID-19 infections of all the countries on Earth. According to data by Johns Hopkins University, and at the time of writing, the US with a population of 331 million, had recorded 4,396,030 COVID-19 cases and 150,034 deaths. Brazil, 2,483,191 cases and 88,539 deaths - the second highest in the world only behind the US. The leaders of both these nations have given mixed messages to people on the wearing of facial masks to help contain the Novel Coronavirus. Both once refused to wear masks. And both have promoted a drug for the treatment of COVID-19 - a drug not approved by any health system. Moreover, Donald Trump of the US, went as far as suggesting Americans could take bleach and disinfectant as remedies for COVID-19.

There has been no national leadership by Trump on COVID-19. To best protect the pubic health, the Governors of the individual States, with limited resources, have had to battle COVID-19 from community to community amid calls from Trump to re-open local economies - actions, which have contributed to increase COVID-19 cases and deaths in the US.

With more than 150,000 Americans dead from COVID-19, Trump's recorded distractions have been to focus on confederate statutes, holding a rally in a COVID-19 infectious city, deploying federal law enforcement, supposedly, to cities to fight crime, and blaming China for everything virus related.

In contrast, the most populous nation on the Planet, China, with a population of 1.4 billion people, has not politicized COVID-19, and has officially reported 87,107 cases with 4,658 deaths. Wearing facial masks is mandated in China and its Central government has waged the fight against COVID-19 - with all responsibility not left to provincial governments.

So despite distractions and deferred responsibility for COVID-19 in the US, clearly close to 4.5 million COVID-19 cases and over 150,000 deaths are more than sufficient to confirm the deadly viral mix of the people, a pandemic and politics in the United States in 2020.
