Western society possesses all the institutions, capabilities and innovations to successfully defeat the Novel Coronavirus and its COVID-19 pandemic disease. Yet, today, worldwide infections from the pesky and highly contagious pathogen stand at a very alarming 4.5 million people with deaths reaching and passing a gruesome 300,000. Why?
The exercised isolationist actions of United States (US) President Donald Trump has created a leadership void in western states. Since WWII, the US has traditional taken the lead in dealing with most international matters that threatened the security and well being of western democracies. That traditional leadership has been absent in this war on COVID-19 which has in part contributed to the spread of COVID-19.
Also, politicizing the pandemic - spats of blame traded between the US and the People's Republic of China (PRC), have done nothing to improve western actions against the Novel Coronavirus.
Moreover, delayed western action and ill-preparedness on COVID-19 have contributed to the disease wrecking fear, infection and death.
And perhaps the most significant reason COVID-19 has been able to run amok has been the failure of western states to have effectively utilize all intelligence in determining that the Novel Coronavirus was capable of such deadly impacts in the West.
Western society has a very scientific and capable network of international clandestine operations and I fail to comprehend any absence of credible intelligence warnings that happenings in Wuhan, China, in December, 2019 and in January, 2020, would transcend to western borders.
Therefore, given all the capabilities, institutions and innovations of western society, blaming China for the Novel Coronavirus should be rejected.
And given the sad and regrettable reality that COVID-19 has already killed close to 86,000 people in the US; 34,000 in the United Kingdom (UK); 31,000 in Italy; 27,000 in Spain; another 27,000 in France; 7,000 in Germany; 8,000 in Belgium; 5,000 in Canada; 14,000 in Brazil; and many more in the West, it is high time that western nations seize upon the initiative of the European Union (EU) and raise the means to earmark toward the full execution of developing vaccines and treatments - to be shared equally between the nations, in order to defeat COVID-19.
Western institutions, capabilities and innovations are already in place to defeat COVID-19. But somebody needs to lead the charge. No unitary entity could defeat this Novel Coronavirus. It will take a global cooperative effort by all of the people acting united to defeat the mysterious, pesky, highly contagious and deadly COVID-19.
