This May Day - Labor Day in most jurisdictions worldwide, May 1, 2020, comes at a unique time for the labor movement and for all its workers. The day comes with paradoxical implications for workers since most are precluded from the traditional rallies and celebrations, which would usually mark the occasion, but have been canceled because of the Novel Coronavirus and its pandemic disease, COVID-19. Yet, many workers, most deemed essential, are required to work today.
From nurses, aides and janitors on the frontlines in hospitals fighting the deadly and still spreading COVID-19 pandemic, which has thus far infected over 3.3 million people worldwide and has killed over 237,000, to first responders - EMTs, firemen and police, to grocery store workers, mail carriers, meat plant workers, pharmacy workers, delivery persons and the Teamsters behind the wheels of trucks keeping shelves stocked, this May Day should be specially dedicated to them - their astounding service and in full recognition of the essential role they play as a part of labor in sustaining humanity's welfare, even amid a pandemic.
Therefore, on this unique May Day as we recognize the essential role played by labor in keeping the rest of us alive and alive amid COVID-19, humanity should also endorse, promote and adhere to the all the rights of each and every worker.
To the workers, to labor, to the people, we thank and respect all of you, especially on this May Day, 2020. May the kindness and blessings of God be with you.
