The South China Morning Post (SCMP), a Hong Kong media outlet, citing the Journal Science, is reporting that American scientists at the University of Texas Austin and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), have created an atomic map of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), a crucial step toward developing a possible vaccine and treatment of the epidemic that has plagued China and transcended to other countries.
The American scientific team, according to the south Asia media house, worked with genetic code of the virus made publicly available by Chinese researchers. Researchers have created a 3D atomic scale map of part of the virus that latches onto to and infects human cells. They used innovative system called cryogenic electron microscopy. As a result, scientists have developed a stabilize sample of a key part of the Novel Coronavirus called the spike protein - upon which, a vaccine could attach allowing for human immune fight against COVID-19.
Though a vaccine against COVID-19 could still be months away, the accomplishments of US scientists working with materials obtained from Chinese researchers, clearly denote the vast scope of scientific achievement that cooperative multinational medical research could accomplish for the sake of humanity.
Therefore, replacing deadly and economy draining wars with vast international scientific spending, cooperation, research, technology and innovation, should be recognized as a more viable path over war toward the continuity of the human species.
