On Tuesday, January 12, 2016, United States(US) President Barack Obama in his last State of the Union address before a joint session of the Congress, will proudly stand before the American people to confidently declare that the State of the Union that binds this great democracy, is strong - a fittingly and accurate assessment.
With a growing economy that has withstood the pressures of a behemoth world economic recession, President Obama could point to a falling unemployment rate as testimony of America's resurgence. A scaled down military operation in Afghanistan, and an air campaign against the Islamic State(IS) in Syria and in Iraq, augurs well for the security of the nation along with an insistence of freedom of navigation on the East and South China Seas, while standing up to Russia on matters concerning the security of Europe, the President could argue.
However, though the general health and wealth of the US will be strong and secure in 2016, clear and distinct factors remain active and moot that could effect the welfare of the democracy.
Race relations, justice and equality - factors and facets that America should have overcome more than a generation ago, will remain in focus in 2016. Any further souring of race relations, justice and equality will pose a greater threat to the stability of the US that any Middle East extremist group in 2016 and beyond.
Fatal police shootings of civilians reached the epidemic number of 965 on December 24, 2015, according to figures published by the Washington Post. For too long and far too frequently, the victims of these shootings are young black men. Black Lives Matter and similar socially conscious groups, including the Nation of Islam, have been protesting and rallying demanding an end to the racist and class practices from Boston, to Cleveland, to Oakland, to Ferguson, to Minneapolis, to New York, to Miami, to Washington, DC, to Chicago and beyond. Yet, more incidents occur like the recent shooting of an innocent black woman from behind her home door by police when they shot and killed a black suspect outside.
Ramblings by Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump against Muslims and immigrants have raised suspicion among all minorities of the true intent and agenda of any likely Trump presidency in 2016.
While the US remains strong and secure in 2016, careless deliberate actions effecting race relations, justice and equality could be dangerously incubated with a potential to throw the union into turmoil in 2016 and beyond. Therefore, equal police race relations and actions and equal justice under the law must never deviate from being fair in 2016.
