The United Nations(UN) Security Council(SC) unanimously passed a resolution yesterday paving a way to bring peace to Syria. The convincing approval by the international body of the necessity for peace to Syria, represents a stark turnaround from the past four years, when China and Russia vetoed numerous resolutions for peace.
Moreover, yesterday's unanimous resolution of a road map to peace in Syria, fails to mention the fate of Bashar al Assad, thus offering a good omen to a final peace in Syria. Assad's omission underscores that the UN will not attest to any attempts to legitimize Assad against whom UN agencies have provided compelling evidence of committing crimes against humanity.
Yet, the UN has recognized the insisting need for peace in Syria and has called for a ceasefire within a month, talks between the regime and the opposition, an endorsement of continued fighting against the Islamic State(IS) and a two-year time line to create a unity government in Damascus and to hold new elections.
