When United States(US) President Barack Obama addresses the nation tonight in regards to the recent mass killing by firearms of 14 innocent people in San Bernardino, California, last week, President Obama could fittingly lament on the need for stricter background checks of applicants for gun ownership. The President could also argue on the unnecessary need for civilians to own powerful assault multi-clip weapons.
President Obama has made similar laments and arguments before, the most touching coming back in December, 2014, following the despicable and heinous killing of 20-first graders along with six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, Connecticut.
The National Rifle Association(NRA) and the right-wing arm of the Republican Party in the United States Congress have not changed their pro-gun stance since Newtown and the slaughter of 20 children. Will they change now after the killing of 14 adults in California?
Gun control legislation in America will not be sufficient to combat senseless mass killings and the rise in gun violence. The ethos of the nation must demand and usher in a time to end gun violence.
