A 26-year-old American man walked onto a college campus yesterday in a rural town, in the state of Oregon, and shot and killed nine students and a teacher. Nine others were wounded.
This mass killing - one of far too many in recent years, starkly underscores yet another failing of current gun control laws in the United Sates(US) and the inability to identify potential perpetrators in order to prevent such utter violence involving guns. No other developed country in the world suffers as many gun crimes as the US.
Therefore, as President Barack Obama and other like minded Democrats have called for common sense legislation to combat gun violence, the gun lobby and conservatives, who have stood in the way of prior efforts to stem the easy availability of guns, should now take stock of the growing problem posed under current laws. Second Amendment rights allowing for gun ownership must be tempered with modern day common sense of the reality of a rising tide of mass gun violence.
Moreover, examination of the circumstances and of the conditions that lead perpetrators to commit such heinous crimes is worthy of study. That individuals with families could descend to the doldrums of despair to commit these mass killings without any prior recognition or intervention, is indicative of a failing of the social environment in American.
However, the resilient people of the US having a strong resolve for comfort, could now place additional pressure upon their political leaders to rectify the gun problems of the nation once and for all.
