The yearning faces of hope of the tens of thousands of Ukrainian youth who amassed at the Maidan two winters ago - braving the natural elements and violence from a Russian backed tyrant, to demonstrate their dreams of westernization and a divorce from Russia, were touching.
Sadly, today those faces have very much disappeared from the scenes of the embattled nation and have been replaced by Russian-backed separatists carving out larger swaths of Ukrainian territory to add to Vladimir Putin's sphere of influence.
Gone are the faces of youthful hope who aspired to be like their peers in the European Union(EU) and they have been substituted with by reality of evacuating older displaced citizens displaced by rebel fighting in east Ukraine.
Missing are the faces of Ukraine's youth who stood up for democracy and the rule of law only to be replaced by reports of dead and injured soldiers and civilians along with the defeatist sight of a retreating tattered and battered ill-equipped Ukraine Army.
And while Germany and the EU have opted not to arm Ukraine to mount a self-saving or deathly defense of their territory from pro-Russian rebels, the dreams and aspirations of Ukraine's youth continue to be deferred with each passing day.
Yet, there is hope. There is hope that the EU could recognize the possible strategic theater of Ukraine as the ground upon which Putin and his agitations could come to a final halt. There is hope that the realization of Ukraine as a means to overwhelming Russian aggression could be finally discovered. But until then, the dreams of Ukraine's youth will remain in doubt.
