Sunday's European Union(EU) endorsement of a United Nations(UN) proposal for a truce in the northern Syrian City of Aleppo, could lead to a broader political process to peace in the Levant, it is hoped.
The UN plan advanced by Peace Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, calls first for a truce in hostilities between the warring parties of the Opposition forces and the Syrian regime. This "freeze in the fighting" has been put forward to get humanitarian assistance to the city which is split between Opposition fighters and forces loyal to Bashar al Assad. The EU and UN are hoping that with the success of an Aleppo truce, the process could be broaden to a wider peace to end the Syrian war that has claimed over 200,000 lives so far.
The EU released a statement of commitment for the de Mistura plan stating that "efforts to achieve a strategic de-escalation of violence as a basis for a broader sustainable political process" was merited. Thus the EU would attempt to engage Gulf states along with Iran and Russia for a final political peace to the war in Syria.
A peace, any peace, any truce in Syria, would be a welcomed miracle to millions of children and people in Syria.
