Given the grim humanitarian conditions in eastern Ukraine resulting from months of pro-Russian agitation, fighting, attacks and rebellion, pro-Russian rebels should now lay down their arms in cease-fire. That Ukrainian has accepted and has permitted Russian humanitarian aid to the rebels, and that the conditions under which such aid would enter into Ukraine and then be distributed in Luhansk, have been agreed upon and established, the Kiev government has demonstrated its responsibility and its national welfare for the many Russians living in Ukraine's east. Thus, any questions as to the Kiev's government commitment to all of Ukraine has been dispelled and the rebels have no cause upon which to continue to fight.
With Kiev's strong showing of responsibility for its eastern residents, it is more than fitting now that the rebels, who are reportedly in dire straits and surrounded by Ukraine forces, lay down their arms in peace. Before Russian aid reached Luhansk earlier this morning, with little fanfare unlike Moscow's aid, the Kiev government had already off loaded tons of aid trucked in from Kharkiv to the rebels in Starobilsk to be distributed throughout the Luhansk region by the Red Cross just as the aid agency is to distribute Russian aid, as reported by the Associated Press(AP).
A hair-raising event of Russian armored personnel carriers and other military vehicles headed to Ukraine earlier this morning is more than enough reason for the rebels to call a cease-fire. Further meddling by Russia and prolonged fighting by pro-Russian rebels will exacerbate humanitarian conditions in eastern Ukraine. The time is ripe for peace in eastern Ukraine should Putin and pro-Russian rebels concur on this premise.
