The days of the Islamic State(IS), the group formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria(ISIS) are numbered. The IS has already started the process of its own destruction. It started with the brutal persecution of Christians in northern Iraq as the IS executed a violent campaign to assume a Caliphate of Iraqi and Syrian territory. The brutal murder, exile and persecution of thousands of Christians and other religious minorities in northern Iraq by IS was never going to be overlooked.
A push back against the IS became imminent on the pure moral grounds of religious freedom. It was just a matter of timing to launch attacks upon the group. Henceforth, the group will be weakened and ultimately destroyed because to tolerate religious persecutions in the modern world goes against the fabric of human existence especially in the United States(US) - a nation founded in the pursuit of religious freedom.
While US air strikes have thus far protected the further persecution of some groups in northern Iraq and in the Kurdish region, expect other western nations to assist in the effort against the IS very soon. Pope Francis in his weekly address from the Vatican yesterday condemned the violence against Christians in Iraq. He sufficed that the Church has been "left incredulous and dismayed by the news coming from Iraq." Recognizing that "Thousands of people, among them many Christians, banished brutally from their houses, children dying of hunger and thirst as they flee, women kidnapped, people massacred, violence of all kinds, destruction everywhere...All of this deeply offends God and deeply offends humanity," Pope Francis said as Reuters reported.
Now firmly established as a group that among other atrocities, also persecutes Christians, the IS cannot stand. The processes to bring the group to justice are already in execution in crusade of religious freedom.
