On this Father's Day, we honor all fathers who parent; but I want to pay special tribute to all fathers who have fought and who continue to fight for the freedom of the children of the World. Whether or not your fight for children is on a battlefield or in an office coordinating relief efforts on behalf of children, we honor you. We honor you at sea heading to safeguard the welfare of children; we honor you intermingling among the masses in covert operations to protect children; we honor you journalists who face danger everyday to break the stories that tell of the need of child protections; we honor the various NGOs who face abuse in far away lands securing the rights of children; we honor dads of the Armed Services who are at the frontline of worldwide child protection; and we honor our governments that pledge equal protection for children.
Furthermore, I want to extend a very special Father's Day to fathers who have lost children to gun violence. Let there be no misunderstanding: the lives of your children DO trump any constitutional claim by any other to possess a firearm. May you find comfort and solace. We pray that the safeguards you advocate find furtile ears and pens in the legislatures.
