Putin's Prowl

It shouldn't  come as any surprise that pro-Russia agitations have surfaced in eastern Ukraine. Putin has kept on the prowl along Ukrainian borders seeking the fateful time to pounce upon more of Ukraine's territory. As Ukraine Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk puts it: "An anti-Ukrainian plan is being put into operation...under which foreign troops will cross the border and seize the territory of the country...We will not allow this," Reuters reported this morning. Russia's menacing in Ukraine launched pro-Russian attempts to take over state facilities in Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine yesterday. These attempts all occurred with Russia having an assembly of  40,000 on the border of Ukraine. About 70 separatists have been arrested by Ukraine forces, yet Ukraine is not immune from Putin's desire for prey. NATO and the United States have warned Russia over the tension in Ukraine, and Russia, being Russia, has called on Kiev not to intervene in its own territory to quell pro-Russian separatists. Russia will continue to menace Ukraine until Ukraine finds security under the NATO umbrella. Prime Minister Yatseniuk's comments two weeks ago that Ukraine's membership in NATO was not on his government's agenda, was a shot into his own foot and into those of the Ukraine people - the people, who braved the elements to be on the Maidan to desire freedom and to be closer to the EU and away from Russia. Yatseniuk's statement was obviously made to ease Russia's fear of having such a large NATO member on its border; but the prime minister ought to know by now, that anything  said will never appease Putin. For the sake of the aspirerers who demonstrated for a life of western values, Ukraine's secure future must come under the umbrella of NATO and in the economic stability of the EU.
