Of Civility, Caution and Patience in Western Diplomacy

Throughout the current crisis in Crimea, Ukraine; confronted by Russian military aggression; by China's inaction to go up against the Russian Federation to join the international community in condemning the referendum in Crimea, Western powers have exhibited a civil, cautious and diplomatic reservation to Russia. This rational approach by the United States(US) and the European Union(EU), has been remarkably calm. For weeks the US and EU have called on the Russian Federation to stand down on Ukraine. In response, Putin has escalated military incursions into Crimea, Ukraine. The West has warned Russia of consequences of its actions, yet Russia continues to up the ante in Ukraine. The Ukraine acting prime minister has traveled to the White House in Washington, DC and the United Nations(UN) in New York, to complain and to seek help against Russian aggression. As he sat with President Obama, Russian troops amassed at his country's borders. US Secretary of State John Kerry, as recent as last Friday, traveled to London to negotiate a peace with the Russian Federation. Instead of negotiating though peaceful means, Russia instead chose to deepen the crisis by extending Russian incursions deeper into Ukraine by taking control of gas and water facilities outside of Crimea. Still, the West continues to strongly insist on Russian withdrawal from Ukraine territory. Threats of sanctions by the West to Putin's Russia have flatly fallen on deaf ears. Rational, sober and collective diplomacy by the West toward a peaceful solution to the Crimea, Ukraine crisis, has not deterred Putin's intent. So on this Sunday, March 16, 2014; on the day Crimeans decide independence or to join Russia through referendum, let it be duly noted that Western powers have done all the peaceful work to avert a deepening crisis as Russia continues to invade Ukraine sovereign territory.
