The Qufu 100

Scores of brave freedom-seeking activists in China, have defied the possibility of arrest and imprisonment, and have descended upon a city in Shandong province to protest the death of one of their members' father while he was visiting a prosecutor's office. Xue Fushun, the father of Xue Mingkai - an activist who has been jailed twice for his opposition to China's one-party government, died on January 29 in a fall from the fourth floor of the prosecutor's building in Qufu, Shandong province, the Associated Press(AP) reports. Fushun had gone to the prosecutor to argue for his freedom from a detention house, where he and his wife were confined by local authorities as the Chinese often do to the relatives of activists to discourage dissent. Local police deemed the incident of Fushun's death a suicide and declined to investigate, but Beijing human rights lawyer, Jiang Tianyong, appropriately asked : "He was seeking freedom from state security, and how on earth would he want to kill himself?"  This incident surrounding the death of the elderly man took place around the same time Beijing was jailing freedom and transparency advocate Xu Zhiyong. In response to Fushun's death, scores of activists instead of staying at home for the Spring Festival, have been arriving in Qufu as a sign of resilience in their movement for freedom in light of recent jail sentences metered out to activists for freedom and transparency. The activists, we have dubbed: "The Qufu 100" have said "more of us should move from the Internet to real life and show the power we have as citizens." The activists have travelled from many cities around China including Guangzhou, Hunan, Beijing. Many of them were rounded up, interrogated and sent away from Qufu, but many daringly turned right around and returned to the seat of the protest, Qufu, the home of the philosopher Confucius.
