Toward an Assad-Free Syria

Tomorrow, Syrian parties and the international community will meet in Geneva with a view to establishing a framework for a transitional government in Syria. President Bashara al-Assad must not be allowed to continue in Syria. He should be indicted before the World Court for crimes against humanity. Assad has gassed and barrel-bomb Syria's children. He is a war criminal in my opinion and thus no further respect accorded to heads of states should be shown Assad. Toward the end of 2013, United Nations Human Rights Chief, Navi Pillay, clearly and explicitly informed the World that evidence pointed to Assad as an actor in war crimes within Syria. The human rights chief said "massive evidence of very serious crimes, war crimes, crimes against humanity" were authorized in Syria at the highest level including the head of state, Assad. Moreover, more compelling evidence as to the horrendous crimes committed in Syria were corroborated yesterday in a released prosecutor report, which has found clear evidence that Syria has systematically tortured and executed about 11,000 detainees since the war started in 2011. One of the authors of the new report, Professor Sir Geoffrey Nice, has told the BBC that the scale and consistency of the killings provided strong evidence of government involvement that could support a criminal prosecution. The gassing of children in Syria in 2013 in our World must not go unpunished. Justice must be served. Assad must stand trial for crimes against humanity.
